Personal Background
Dean Dafis was born in Philadelphia to Greek immigrant parents and grew up in a working-class family, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and community focus. He attended law school in Richmond, Virginia, and began his career as a legal aid attorney before transitioning to securities litigation on Wall Street. After the 2008 financial crisis, Dafis shifted to non-profit advocacy, where he championed marriage equality and advised equality groups nationwide. He later moved to Maplewood, where he became the town's first openly LGBTQ+ representative and subsequently served as Mayor, focusing on pedestrian safety, affordable housing, and small business support. Currently, Dafis is the Director in the Division of Housing and Community Resources at the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, where he has overseen programs aimed at preventing homelessness with notable success.
