U.S.A.
Gary Locke was born in Seattle, Washington, and holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Yale University and a juris doctor from Boston University School of Law. He began his career in public service by being elected to the Washington House of Representatives and later served as King County Executive. Locke made history as the first Chinese American governor in U.S. history, having been elected Governor of Washington in 1996 and reelected in 2000. He then transitioned to the federal government, serving as Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Ambassador to China before joining Dorsey & Whitney as a senior advisor.
Gary Locke's political identity is marked by an intriguing blend of fiscal conservatism and progressive advocacy, particularly in education and immigration. His tenure as governor saw him advocate for no-new-taxes policies and spending cuts, yet he also championed affirmative action and provided sanctuary to Chinese dissidents. Locke's approach reveals a strategic balancing act between economic pragmatism and a commitment to social equity.
