Gilbert M. Woodward began his career as a printer and proofreader before transitioning to the legal profession. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. After the war, Woodward became active in the legal community, serving as District Attorney and Mayor of La Crosse. He also held a seat in the United States House of Representatives and was a frequent litigant before the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
