Dans holds a Bachelor's degree in economics and a Master's degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was president of the Federalist Society chapter. He spent nearly a decade practicing commercial litigation in New York City before establishing a successful solo practice, during which he secured a significant ruling against a $27 billion fraud allegation.
