Perry Greeley Holden was born in 1865 in Dodge Center, Minnesota. He graduated from Michigan Agricultural College in 1889 and subsequently taught there until 1893. Holden earned an M.S. from Michigan State University in 1895 and became an assistant professor of soil physics and the first professor of agronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1896 to 1900. He then managed the Funk Brothers Seed Company before serving as vice dean of agriculture and head of the ISU Extension Service at Iowa State University from 1902 to 1912.
