Randolph Carpenter graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1917, where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. He began his professional career as a lawyer in Marion, Kansas, the same year he was admitted to the bar. During World War I, Carpenter served in the U.S. Army National Guard, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant while deployed to France. After his military service, he returned to his hometown and continued his family's agricultural endeavors. His personal life included marriage to Helen Frances Williams in 1920.
