Bethany Johnson grew up in rural northwest Missouri, where they faced personal challenges related to their gender identity. After completing high school in Savannah, MO, and nearly finishing college in Springfield, MO, Johnson transitioned and moved to Chicago in 2003, completing their transition in Thailand in 2006. They became the first transgender roller derby player in Chicago and later returned to Springfield to finish college in 2016. Bethany Johnson's political identity is marked by a compelling blend of deeply held social justice principles and a strategic focus on local and federal resource allocation. Johnson's advocacy for Palestinian rights and accountability in Israel juxtaposes with a demand for transparency and justice in domestic law enforcement, suggesting a consistent moral compass applied globally and locally. Notably, Johnson's stance on military and social spending reveals a calculated approach to redirecting resources from defense to education and healthcare, challenging conventional defense-first policies. Her commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and abortion access, coupled with her surprising demand to halt funding to states with anti-abortion policies, highlights a nuanced strategy to leverage federal power for social justice causes.
