Tilghman Howard

Tilghman Howard was born in 1797 near Easley, South Carolina, and later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was admitted to the bar in 1818. He spent nearly a decade serving as US Attorney for Indiana under President Andrew Jackson before entering the legislative arena. Howard was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until 1840. Despite several unsuccessful bids for higher office, his career included a brief diplomatic appointment as chargé d'affaires to the Republic of Texas in 1844.
